Symptoms

  • Didn’t operate
  • Plug head had partially melted
  • Carbon deposits on the plug blades

History

  • Was plugged into an extension cord for a few months, then died.

Things to check

  • Power cord
  • Fuse
  • AC capacitor

Solution

The power cord was supplying power but the protection circuit was compromised, so I replaced it. A $25 replacement power cord is cheap insurance knowing the recipient won’t be burning down their house because of you. The new cord OD was larger than the previous one so I measured the existing cord clamp, modeled it in Fusion 360 widening the clearing a bit and printed it. Worked like a charm.

I noticed the compressor was running, but the fan was not. I measured the start capacitor and it was fine, and in that process I removed the spade terminals then reconnected them. Maybe just a bad connection. Fuses were good, too. Winning by default is still winning in my book!
